Lecture by Vasiliki Kourti-Papamoustou

Unlocking creativity: Composing music with children and teenagers

This lecture is aimed at composers and music educators and attempts to explore cases where children are directly involved in the compositional process. How is it when you compose with children/teenagers? Are there different methods for it? How can the different steps of this process (conscious listening, exploration of sounds, improvisation, musical notation) be structured and how could musical ideas of children with little or no musical education be guided and brought to light?

The composer and music educator Vasiliki Kourti Papamoustou will present excerpts from her works and talk about her experiences on composing with children. Participants will have the opportunity to exchange ideas and then develop, notate and perform their own compositions.

Composition Workshop with Nina Janßen-Deinzer and Johanna Greulich

Workshop | 15-16 October (12:00-15:00)
Concert | 16 Οκτωβρίου (20:00)
Goethe Institut (Βασιλίσσης Όλγας 66)

15-16 October 2023, Goethe Institut Thessaloniki

Johanna Greulich (soprano)Nina Janßen-Deinzer (clarinets)

The Contemporary Music Lab (CML) of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in cooperation with Goethe Institut Thessaloniki organizes a Workshop for Composition and Interpetation of Contemporary Music on 15–16 October 2023 that will take place at the Goethe Institut.  At the workshop  two prominent German musicians, namely, Johana Greulich (soprano) and Nina Janssen-Deinzer (clarinets) participate.

The idea of the workshop is based on the self-evident notion that, since the instrumental music is written for – and played by – instruments (or voice), the cooperation of the composers and the instrumentalists is a “sine qua non” requirement of the compositional process; respectively, the knowledge of the compositional approach, that is, of the creative intent of the composer is of great and essential importance for the interpretation of a composition.

It is part of the Contemporary Music Lab project which concerns the organization of concerts/performances of contemporary music in historical monuments of Thessaloniki. The present concert takes place in the Yeni Tzami, in a place with special acoustics and obvious cultural connotations (East-West). The use of such unique (also in terms of acoustics) historic monuments for concerts/performances functions to the benefit of the monuments themselves – in terms of their prominence – but also of the creative imprint of the city’s cultural continuity.

Dimitris Marinos – Mandolin in Contemporary Music

Contrapuntal Variations (1995) για μαντολίνο και live electronics του C.P.First

Έχει παρουσιαστεί σαν σολίστ με την Ορxήστρα των Χρωμάτων, I Solisti Veneti, Chicago String Ensemble, Portugese Symphony Orchestra, Albany Symphony Orchestra μεταξύ άλλων.
