Born in New Zealand in 1966, John Psathas studied composition and piano at Victoria University of Wellington. Since 1994 he has been teaching at the Music School of the same University. In 2004, his original compositions were heard at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Athens Olympics. The work of “Zeibekiko” is included in a program that seeks to attribute 2,500 years of Greek music through contemporary compositions and adaptations of traditional Greek music. In April 2010 he was honored as a Distinguished Associate Composer at the Winnipeg New Music Festival. The first big success came with “Matre’s Dance” in 1991 – a piano and percussion duet with great energy – performed with great success by Evelyn Glennie and has since made the name of John Psatha internationally known. This work and the “Drum Dances” have been included in the repertoire of all percussionists around the world. But it was in 2000 in Bologna, Italy, when the Concerto for Saxophone was played, that Psatha’s name received international attention. In 2002, the world premiere of the Double Concerto “View from Olympus” was given during the Manchester Commonwealth Games. John Psathas has received many awards and honors: twice won the SOUNZ Contemporary Music Award (2002 and 2004) for various works and three times the Best Classic CD of the Year (2000, 2004 and 2007).
