Ways of doing things – Lecture by composer Nicolas Tzortzis

“Robert Fripp, guitarist and basic member of the progressive rock band King Crismon, once said that his band was not that much a band than “a way of doing things”, meaning that, even if the musicians have changed over the years, what makes King Crimson what it is, is a specific approach to music making, that has remained unchanged throughout the decades.
In my lecture, I will talk about some of my latest works, who almost all of them combine music with other media (theatre, electronics, video), and about the different approach that every work needs, with all the constraints and the liberties that come with it. These works are very different from each other, with diverse starting points and considerations, that demand each time another approach and that the composer reinvents himself, broadens his aesthetics and tries to find the necessary tools that will better serve the realisation of his idea.”

Biographical Sketch
Born in Athens, Greece in May 1978, Nicolas Tzortzis has been living in Paris, France, since 2002. He studied instrumental and electronic composition with Philippe Leroux at the CRD de Blanc Mesnil and at the University of Montreal (PhD, April 2013), musical theatre composition with Georges Aperghis at the Hochschule der Kunste in Bern, Switzerland and Computer Aided Composition at the University of Paris 8 under the direction of Horacio Vaggione and José Manuel Lopez-Lopez. In 2009-2010 he attended the CURSUS 1 of composition and computer music at the IRCAM and was later selected for the CURSUS 2 for the years 2010-2012, where he presented “Incompatible(s) V” for silent piano and live electronics, premiered by Pavlos Antoniadis.

He has taken part in master classes with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Brian Ferneyhough, Beat Furrer and François Paris, as well as computer music seminars at the IRCAM. In 2010, he was selected for the 6th New Composers Forum of the Ensemble Aleph.

His music has been performed in France, Greece, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Great Britain, Spain, the Netherlands, the USA, Canada, Argentina, Peru, Japan, South Korea and Australia, and has been selected and awarded in competitions worldwide (USA, Japan, South Korea, Germany, France, Austria, Greece, Italy, Great Britain, Argentina).

He has worked with ensembles such as Divertimento Ensemble, Proxima Centauri, Linea, Arditti Quartet, Tokyo Simfonietta, Arsenale, ECCE, Earplay, ACME, NOISE, Nouvel Ensemble Modern, Binoculaire, Nouvel Ensemble Contemporain, Juventas New Music Ensemble, Kairos Quartet, Mantegna Quartet, EnAccord Strijkkwartet, Aleph, Klang, Cairn, Ergon, Dissonart, Trio IAMA, Texture and Vertixe Sonora and soloists Aleksander Gabrys, Quentin Darricau, Lisa Cella, Krista Martynes, Lorna Windsor, Julian Boutin and Spyros Thomas.

Selected by Peter Eötvös, he was composer-in-residence at the Herrenhaus Edenkoben for the second semester of 2013, he was resident at the Villa Ruffieux in Sierre, Switzerland, from February to April 2014. In 2015, he was a Fulbright visiting scholar at the CNMAT in UC Berkeley, working on a new piece for the Ensemble Earplay, and had a two-month residency at the Akademia Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart.

His recent works include a multimedia work for the ensemble Artéfacts commissioned by the Onassis Foundation, a sound and video installation with German artist Sascha Hahn and a piano concerto for Pavlos Antoniadis and the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra.

«Ο Robert Fripp, κιθαρίστας και βασικό μέλος του συγκροτήματος προοδευτικού ροκ King Crimson, είχε δηλώσει κάποτε για το γκρουπ του πως δεν είναι τόσο συγκρότημα όσο «ένας τρόπος να γίνονται τα πράγματα» (a way of doing things), θέλοντας να πει πως δεν είναι τόσο τα άτομα που κάνουν τους King Crimson αυτό που είναι, αλλά ο τρόπος δουλειάς, κοινός παρονομαστής ανά τις δεκαετίες.
Στην διάλεξή μου θα μιλήσω για κάποια από τα τελευταία μου έργα, που σχεδόν όλα συνδυάζουν τη μουσική και με άλλα μέσα (θέατρο, ηλεκτρονικά, βίντεο), και για τους διαφορετικούς τρόπους δουλειάς που το κάθε μέσο επιτάσσει, με τους περιορισμούς και τις ελευθερίες που συνεπάγονται.. Έργα πολύ διαφορετικά μεταξύ τους, με ξεχωριστές αφετηρίες και ζητούμενα, που απαιτούν κάθε φορά μια άλλη προσέγγιση και από το δημιουργό να επανεφεύρει τον εαυτό του, να διευρύνει την αισθητική του και να προσπαθήσει να βρει τα απαραίτητα εργαλεία που θα συμβάλουν στην όσο γίνεται καλύτερη απόδοση των ιδεών του.»

Βιογραφικό σημείωμα
Ο Νικόλας Τζώρτζης γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα το 1978 και απο το 2002 ζει στο Παρίσι. Σπούδασε σύνθεση με τον Philippe Leroux στο ωδείο του Blanc-Mesnil και στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Μόντρεαλ, όπου πήρε το διδακτορικό του, σύνθεση μουσικού θέατρου με τον Γιώργο Απέργη στην Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών της Βέρνης, και σύνθεση βοηθούμενη από υπολογιστή στο Paris 8 με τους José Manuel Lopez-Lopez και Horacio Vaggione.
Το 2009 επιλέχτηκε για το IRCAM CURSUS 1 και εν συνεχεία για το CURSUS 2, παρουσιάζοντας το έργο « Incompatible(s) V » για silent πιάνο κι ηλεκτρονικά, στα πλαίσια του φεστιβαλ Manifeste 2012 στο Παρίσι, με σολίστ τον Παύλο Αντωνιάδη.
Έχει υπάρξει Artist-in-residence στο Herrenhaus Edenkoben το δεύτερο εξάμηνο του 2013, υπότροφος στη Villa Ruffieux της Ελβετίας το 2014, visiting scholar στο Πανεπιστήμιο Berkeley της Καλιφόρνια χάρη σε υποτροφία Fulbright το πρώτο εξάμηνο 2015, και εν συνεχεία φιλοξενούμενος καλλιτέχνης στην Ακαδημία Schloss Solitude της Στουτγκάρδης.
Έργα του έχουν παιχτεί σε Ασία, Αυστραλία, Ευρώπη, Βόρεια και Νότια Αμερική από σύνολα όπως οι Arditti Quartet, Divertimento Ensemble, Proxima Centauri, Earplay, das Neue Ensemble, Κρατική Ορχήστρα Αθηνών, ACME, Alternance, NEC, Binoculaire, Tokyo Sinfonietta, Artéfacts, DissonART, Ergon Ensemble, Arsenale, ECCE, Juventas, Aleph, ÖENM, Wild Rumpus, BNMI, κ.α., καθώς και σολίστ όπως οι Krista Martynes, Lisa Cella, Mark Knopp, Elena Andreyev, Σπύρος Θωμάς κ.α.
Έχει διακριθεί σε 35 διεθνείς διαγωνισμούς σύνθεσης, αποσπώντας συνολικά 23 βραβεία παγκοσμίως (ΗΠΑ, Νότια Κορέα, Ιαπωνία, Γερμανία, Γαλλία, Αυστρία, Ελλάδα, Ιταλία, Αργεντινή).
Τον Δεκέμβριο του 2012 του απονεμήθηκε το πρώτο βραβείο στον Πανελλήνιο Διαγωνισμό Σύνθεσης που διοργάνωσε η Κρατική Ορχήστρα Θεσσαλονίκης. Στα πλαίσια του βραβείου, η ΚΟΘ του ανέθεσε να γράψει ένα νέο έργο για πιάνο και ορχήστρα, το οποίο θα παρουσιαστεί στις 8 Δεκεμβρίου 2017, με σολίστ τον Παύλο Αντωνιάδη. Το έργο, με τίτλο « Contre tous, hommage à Nikos Galis », θα αποτελεί έναν φόρο τιμής στον μεγαλύτερο Έλληνα καλαθοσφαιριστή που συνέδεσε τόσο στενά την ζωή και την καριέρα του με την πόλη της Θεσσαλονίκης.
Στα άμεσα μελλοντικά του σχέδια για το 2018 είναι η κυκλοφορία του πρώτου μονογραφικού του CD με έργα μουσικής δωματίου, από το Γερμανικό σύνολο Das Neue Ensemble, στην Αγγλική εταιρεία toccata records, και ένα νέο έργο για σόλο βιολί και έξι όργανα, για την Alexandra Greffin-Klein και το Γαλλικό σύνολο Court-Circuit.
