In his masterclass, composer and multimedia artist Christian Benvenuti will introduce the main techniques and methods he used in his works, along with a reflection on his pluralist approach to style. In the second half, Benvenuti will lead an interactive session where the works submitted by participants, in the form of scores, live performances or recordings, will be discussed.

In the so-called Zettabyte Era in which we currently live, there is a need for new aesthetic responses and approaches from composers, performers and listeners. In this context, it is essential to understand how we communicate through music by looking into the dynamics of music information. In this talk, the phenomenon of expectation will be discussed along methods derived from information theory to measure and describe cognitive aspects of the musical mind. These methods will be presented in light of their contribution to music cognition, music psychology, music composition, theory, and analysis. Continue reading

On behalf of the jury I am very pleased to announce the results of the first Iannis Xenakis International Electronic Music Competition. The competition raised worldwide interest, attracting 270 submissions, of which 106 were in multi-channel formats. Selecting from as many as 270 pieces proved a challenging but rewarding task, and inevitably many good pieces could not make it into the final five. The selection process was anonymised: our judgements were based solely on our responses to the music. We did not know who the composers are, nor did we have access to titles or programme notes. Please find the selected pieces below.

Contemporary Music Lab presents two lectures by Svetlana Savic on Contemporary Serbian music. Prof. Savic is visiting Aristotle University of Thessaloniki under the Learning Mobility Erasmus+ educational program and will be introduced by the composer Dimitri Papageorgiou
Lecture A – Contemporary Serbian Music
In her first lecture, scheduled for 31.10.2016 18:00, professor Savic is going to present works by prominent Serbian composers: Entr’acte for orchestra, by Zoran Erić, full time professor at Department for Composition at Faculty of Music, Rector of the University of Arts in Belgrade, Orbits for orchestra, by Aleksandra Vrebalov, currently living in USA, gesualdo dub/raum mit gelöschter figur, for piano and ensemble, by Marko Nikodijevic, living in Germany, and Mirror for mezzo-soprano, violoncello, piano and chamber orchestra, by Srdjan Hofman, professor emeritus at Department for Composition, Faculty of Music in Belgrade. Entr’acte and Orbits are exceptionally interesting in their musical form – employing principles of symmetry and spiral organization of the musical material, and Nikodijevic’s concert for piano and Hofman’s Mirror present intriguing and innovative approach to the role of soloists and ensemble, treatment of musical heritage and poetical text, followed with incredible instrumentation. Contemporary Music Lab is presenting an open lecture by the world-wide renowned pianist Stephanos Thomopoulos on the works for solo piano by Iannis Xenakis. The lecture is preceeding a concert , scheduled for Saturday October 29th at AVGO in which Stephanos Thomopoulos is going to present a Triptych, focused around the piano works of Iannis Xenakis
Stéphanos is the first pianist in France to have completed a Doctorate in performance at the Paris Conservatoire. The title of his thesis was Performance Issues regarding the xenakian piano : from concept to instrumental language. His doctoral work has brought him to participate in concerts and conferences about Xenakis in New York, Montreal, Paris, London, Belgrade, Leipzig, Athens, Monaco, as well as to publish an article in the volume Performing Xenakis, next to personalities such as Milan Kundera, Michel Tabachnik and Irvine Arditti (Pendragon Press 2010). https://

CML A.U.Th. in colaboration with dissonArt ensemble presents an open rehearsal of Jani Christou’s works Anaparastasis III (The Pianist) and The Strychnine Lady.
Friday June 17th 14:30 – 17:30 Foyer – A.U.Th – Music Department (Thermi)
Jani Christou composed his legendary works Anaparastasis III and The Strychnine Lady between 1967 and 1968. In these works, new and innovative forms of expression are explored. The pieces, scored for ensemble and soloists, transform the roles and functionality of musicians and soloists. Using his own pioneering notation, Christou is extending and at the same time blurring the borders between music and theater.
The event will start with a short talk by the conductor Vladimiros Symeonidis and dissonArt member Theodoros Patsalidis introduced by the composer Zesses Seglias.
After the end of the rehearsal there will be an open discussion.
Anaparastasis III along with The Strychnine Lady will be staged at the GNO Alternative Stage of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in 25 June, under the direction of Alexandros Efklidis. [read more here] Continue reading

This workshop discusses the intersection of classical music recordings with digital audio recording techniques and contemporary studio practices.
Topics will include:
– The “it could have happened” approach to editing
– Creating hyperreal recordings
– Capturing the unintentional performance
Steve Savage is an active record producer and recording engineer. He has had 7 Grammy nomintiCons for CD’s on which he was the primary engineer. These include CD’s for Robert Cray, John Hammond, OCs Rush, Elvin Bishop and The Gospel Hummingbirds.
Steve holds his PhD in musicology from the University of London where he studied with the eminent musicologist Nicholas Cook. Recent books include The Art of Digital Audio Recording and Mixing and Mastering in the Box for Oxford University Press, and Bytes & Backbeats: Repurposing Music in the Digital Age for the University of Michigan Press.
Steve Savage is a visiting scholar of the Fulbright foundation.

Το Εργαστήρι Σύγχρονης Μουσικής του ΑΠΘ σε συνεργασία με τη Στέγη Γραμμάτων και Τεχνών, παρουσιάζει μια συναυλία με έργα του πρωτοπόρου στην μιξη ηλεκτρονικούκαι ακουστικού ήχου συνθέτη Mario Davidovsky (γενν. 1934), αλλάκαι των πολύνεώτερων Παναγιώτη Κόκορα και Δημήτρη Μαρωνίδη, που αφουγκράζονται με τον τρόπο τους το εσωτερικότης γης και τα ουρανια σωματα.
Ο ανατρεπτικος συνθετης Jacob Ter Veldhuis αντλεί τη θεματολογια του απόμια διαφήμιση οργάνου γυμναστικής στο χιουμοριστικό έργο του The Body of Your Dreams.
Ο Henrik Hellstenius με το έργο Søkk, έχοντας εμφανείς επιρροές απότη φασματικήμουσικη, παίζει με τη φαντασία του ακροατη, δημιουργώντας κινηματογραφικές εικόνες.
Στο τέλος της συναυλίας ο ακορντεονίστας Παναγιωτης Ανδρέογλου, η Λεττονή πιανιστα και συνθέτρια Gundega Šmite και ο συνθέτης Δημητρης Μαρωνιδης στα live electronics, θα δοκιμάσουν μια κοινήαυτοσχεδιαστική εξερεύνηση, εγκαταλείποντας την ασφαλεια που τους προσφέρουν οι παρτιτούρες και τα μελετημένα εργα του προγράμματος.
Η συναυλία παρουσιάστηκε για πρώτη φορά στο Πάντειο Πανεπιστήμιο στις 16.3.2016 στα πλαίσια του πρότζεκτ Στέγης – Παντείου “Μια γέφυρα μουσικής πάνω από τη Συγγρού”.

Η φρουδική θεωρια για τη διχοτομηση της ψυχης, τις ψυχικές παθογενειες οπως η παρανοια και η υστερια, τα μυθικά συμβολα και αρχετυπα ασκησαν καταλυτική επιρροή στη συγχρονη μουσική μυθοπλασια. Η δραματοποιηση του Ασυνειδητου στις οπερες που βασιστηκαν σε ψυχαναλυτικά κειμενα αναδεικνυει την παθογενεια του χαρακτηρα ως το επικεντρο της δρασης. Η ιδια η μουσική γινεται μια ψυχοτροπος δυναμη.
Σε μια συναυλια που δοκιμαζει με ακραιο τροπο τα ορια της ανθρωπινης φωνης, η σοπρανο Μαιρα Μηλολιδακη και ο συνθετης Ιωσηφ Βαλετ στο πιανο παρουσιαζουν ενα εντυπωσιακό προγραμμα με σκηνες και αριες από το “Καστρο του Κυανοπωγωνα” του Μπαρτοκ, τους “Ποθους του Εγώ” του Βαλετ, τις οπερες “Ο Νιξον στην Κινα” του Ανταμς και “Τα Μυστηρια του Μακαβριου” του Λιγκετι. Ιδιαιτερη στιγμή του προγράμματος η “Σεκουεντσα ΙΙΙ” για σολο φωνή του Μπεριο.
Το Εργαστήριο Σύγχρονης Μουσικής του Α.Π.Θ. διοργανώνει συναυλία με θέμα τη μουσική σχέση Ελλάδας και Δύσης, μια σχέση που ορίζεται από τη μεταφορά «κεντρικών» ιδεών της Δύσης στην «περιφέρεια» μέσω μιας διαδικασίας περισσότερο διαλόγου παρά επιρροής.
Η συναυλία επιχειρεί να ρίξει φως σε (πραγματικές ή φανταστικές) μουσικές συνομιλίες Ελλήνων συνθετών με τη Δύση Θα ακουσθούν (πραγματικές ή φανταστικές) μουσικές συνομιλίες των L.A. Ο πιανίστας και μουσικολόγος Παύλος Αντωνιάδης (MA από το UC San Diego, συνεργάτης στο IRCAM, υποψήφιος διδάκτορας στη HfM Dresden) παρουσιάζει τη διάλεξη “Σωματικότητα και Πολυπλοκότητα στη μουσική για πιάνο μετά το 1950”, καθώς κι ένα ρεσιτάλ πιάνου με έργα Ιάννη Ξενάκη, Brian Ferneyhough και Morton Feldman.
Η αναζήτηση ερμηνευτικών λύσεων για μουσικές εγκεφαλικές και δυσπρόσιτες ανοίγει το δρόμο προς μία ριζικά διαφορετική θεώρηση του ρόλου του σώματος του εκτελεστή. Αποτέλεσμα αυτής της αναζήτησης είναι ένα μοντέλο “σωματικής πλοήγησης” της παρτιτούρας που ξεκλειδώνει τις μυθικές δυσκολίες των έργων και αναδεικνύει τη δυνατότητα πολλαπλών ερμηνειών και ακροάσεων. Στο ρεσιτάλ που ακολουθεί κυριαρχεί η σταδιακή αφαίρεση, από το εκρηκτικό μουσικό θέατρο του Ferneyhough (Opus Contra Naturam για ομιλώντα πιανίστα από την όπερα Shadowtime), στo μαθηματικά υπολογισμένο, πλην όμως ούτε ασώματο ούτε ψυχρό, πρώτο έργο του Ξενάκη για σόλο πιάνο (Herma), κι ως το τελευταίο πιανιστικό έργο του Feldman (Palais de Mari), ένα λαβύρινθο φευγαλέων αναμνήσεων και θραυσμάτων.

Tο Εργαστήριο Σύγχρονης Μουσικής σας προσκαλεί σε μία συναυλία σύγχρονης μουσικής με το dissonart ensemble. Μέσα από τέσσερα χαρακτηριστικά στιγμιότυπα, το πρόγραμμα της συναυλίας διατρέχει τέσσερεις δεκαετίες μουσικής δημιουργίας και αποτυπώνει τις μεταλλαγές που υπέστη το πνεύμα της μουσικής πρωτοπορίας από τα μέσα ως τα τέλη του 20ου αιώνα.

Xenakis – Theraps (1975-6) για σόλο κοντραμπάσο
Ligeti – 10 pieces for woodwind quintet (1968) για κουιντέτο ξύλινων πνευστών

Το dissonart ensemble παρουσιάζει στα πλαίσια του Εργαστηρίου Σύγχρονης Μουσικής του Α.Π..Θ.
MORTON FELDMAN, Trio (1980) για βιολί, τσέλο και πιάνο.
Αν και δε μπορεί να συγκριθεί σε διάρκεια με το εξάωρο μνημειώδες Κουαρτέτο Εγχόρδων ΙΙ, το υπνωτιστικό Trio, διάρκειας 105 λεπτών, αποτελεί ένα από τα πρώτα μίας σειράς έργων της τελευταίας περιόδου του συνθέτη, στα οποία εξερευνά εκτεταμένες χρονικές διάρκειες. Μέσα από ένα διαρκές ξεδίπλωμα του χρόνου, ο Feldman διερευνά ζητήματα όπως αυτό της αμεταβλητότητας στα πλαίσια μίας διαδικασίας και της κίνησης μέσα στη στατικότητα. Χρησιμοποιώντας πολλαπλές επαναλήψεις και παραλλαγές ηχητικών μπλοκ αποτελούμενες από λιτές, αφαιρετικές και διάφανες υφές, που δίνουν ιδιαίτερη έμφαση όχι τόσο στην ανάκρουση αλλά στην απόσβεση του ήχου, ο Feldman δημιουργεί μία μουσική που αποπροσανατολίζει τη χρονική αίσθηση του ακροατή. Έτσι, προσπαθώντας να διακρίνει τους ήχους που συνέβησαν απ’ αυτούς που συμβαίνουν την παρούσα στιγμή, ο ακροατής αφήνεται, τελικά, μετέωρος σ΄ ένα διαρκές παρόν. Για να χρησιμοποιήσουμε μία αναφορά του Feldman στο έργο του Samuel Beckett, αλλά ταιριάζει εξίσου καλά και στο δικό του έργο, “… κάθε γραμμή είναι στην πραγματικότητα η ίδια γραμμή, αν και είναι διατυπωμένη με διαφορετικό τρόπο. Κι όμως ο ειρμός και η ροή [του κειμένου] συμπεριφέρεται σαν να συνέβαινε κάτι άλλο. Δε συμβαίνει κάτι άλλο. Αυτό που κάνεις […] είναι να βυθίζεσαι πιο βαθιά και πιο βαθιά μέσα στη σκέψη.”

Το Εργαστήριο Σϋγχρονης Μουσικής του Α.Π.Θ. παρουσιάζει μία συναυλία σύγχρονης μουσικής σε συνεργασία με το dissonart ensemble. Το πρόγραμμα περιλαμβάνει έργα της τελευταίας εικοσαετίας που παρουσιάζονται για πρώτη φορά στη Θεσσαλονίκη.
H soprano Donatienne Michel-Dasnac και το dissonArt ensemble υπό τη διεύθυνση του Francois Deppe παρουσιάζουν για πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα το έργο του SALVATORE SCIARRINO
IL GIARDINO DI SARA
για σοπράνο και ενόργανο σύνολο
Στη συναυλία της 6ης Απριλίου θα παρουσιασθεί το έργο του σημαντικότερου ιταλού συνθέτη της εποχής μας, του Salvatore Sciarrino Il giardino di Sara (2008). Συμμετέχουν η διάσημη γαλλίδα σοπράνο Donatienne Michel-Dasnac και o μαέστρος και μέλος του γνωστού συγκροτήματος Ιctus, Francois Deppe που θα διευθύνει το dissonArt ensemble.
Aν και ο Salvatore Sciarrino είναι ένας από τους σημαντικότερους συνθέτες της εποχής μας, η μουσική του έχει παιχτεί ελάχιστα στην Ελλάδα. Στη συναυλία της 6ης Απριλίου θα παρουσιασθεί για πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα έργο μουσικής δωματίου του συνθέτη. Το έργο Il giardino di Sara (ο κήπος της Σάρας) για σοπράνο, φλάουτο, κλαρινέτο, πιάνο, βιολί και βιολοντσέλο που πρωτοπαρουσιάσθηκε το 2009 βασίζεται σε κείμενο του σικελιανού ποιητή Leonardo Vigo (1799-1879) από τη συλλογή του δημοτικών τραγουδιών της περιοχής Aci Castello της Σικελίας.
